COMMENT FROM OUR AUTHOR

TUESDAY MARCH 8th 2016

Hi there. I hope you are well and thanks for reading domainsignals.com.

We had some technical problems yesterday getting the issue out and my apologies for that. My computer died with my notes and links.

Back to normal again today!

It's good news for DOT XYZ as they cross the 15 billion mark in DNS queries from over 2.5 million registrations. We also link to yesterday's sales names and numbers from Name Bio.

There are a few articles today including '2.TV or 2TV.COM'. I prefer the DOT TV in this particular case :) There is also a good post for the beginner domainer with tips on how to increase your chances of selling your domains. And Morgan Linton asks which new TLD would you choose?

We also have Frank Schilling on a podcast and a marijuana domain name investor profile (part 1).

On with the newsletter.

THE MARIJUANA DOMAIN NAME MARKET WITH DEB GOWRIE (PART 1)

Today's investor is Deb Gowrie from MarijuanaDomainDaddy.com. She's invested big in weed names and she's sure her investments will pay off. The marijuana industry is going through some big changes in the US and Canada at the moment and today we'll get some background details on why she chose this niche, her domaining background and how she sees her portfolio developing.

How long have you been investing in domains and how did you get started in the industry?

I have been investing in domain names for two years now. It's funny how the idea came to me, but, I won a business called "Grown For You" which started as a cabana garden business. I had just traveled to Denver for a trade show and had about a million people tell me that that name would make a great marijuana domain name. I thought about it, tried to get an actual valuation and decided that I would keep that in the back of my head. I then started reading and researching within the marijuana industry and saw the potential to make some money. My initial and still current plan was to buy low, hold on to them until the market flies open and then sell high.

What was the first domain name you bought?

The first name I bought was THCtokes.com. I investigated the keyword usage but mostly thought it was a catchy name for a small start-up business, or for that matter, anyone entering the marijuana industry from small shops to large companies to newspapers. I have not sold Thc tokes yet. I have had offers but, even though I have a website listing them for sale, I am holding out for the optimum time. Could be next year or could be ten years.

Can you tell me a little bit about marijuanadomaindaddy.com?

MDD is just one of my businesses. It's just me with a partner and we spend very little on marketing. We own over 300 domains. Sometimes we will do some market testing on certain names but we are mostly using them as a long term investment. We are different from your average domain flippers because of that. My eyes are always on the marijuana industry and the domain market. We do a lot of reading to stay informed and up to date.

Why did you choose the marijuana niche?

I think I chose the niche originally with my first name "grownforyou.com". I started reading everything I could get my hands on. I started to contact industry experts and other domainers. Then I started thinking. Look, we all know that the marijuana industry is moving in a forward direction and is, therefore, going to grow. That is the reality. What we don't know is the pace. If you can invest and be patient in an industry that is guaranteed to grow then at some point you will have a home run. I chose this niche mainly for its growth potential.

We'll be back with more from Deb tomorrow when we discuss sales and numbers, but in the meantime, you can connect with her over on Twitter @marijuanadaddy.
